Episode 3: Towers of Silence
The Towers of Silence, or Dakhmas, stood like solemn stone crowns atop the jagged hills outside Yazd. For centuries, these circular structures were where the dead were offered to the sky. As we set up camp in their long, creeping shadows, the air grew unnaturally cold. The wind didn’t whistle here; it whispered in Old Persian.
„Mmm… Do you feel that, Agatha?” Peter muttered, checking the sensors on his dashboard. „The telemetry is stable, but the atmosphere… it’s heavy. Like we’re standing in a crowded room, but we’re the only ones here.”
Figa was the first to notice. She stood perfectly still, her tail wagging in a slow, hypnotic rhythm. She saw the „shadows” — flickering remnants of light huddling between the rocks. They weren’t hostile; they felt fragile, seeking shelter from the encroaching darkness of the modern world.
But then, a much larger presence manifested. Near the motorcycles, a massive silhouette began to form, golden and translucent. It was a Persian Lion, an animal extinct for decades, yet here it stood, guarding the path to the stars. Its eyes were like burning embers.
Peter gasped, reaching for his gear. „Oh! Is that… a ghost? Agatha, don’t move!”
Banga didn’t flinch. She sat on the seat of the Africa Twin, arched her back, and let out a low, vibrating purr. „Pffft… Relax, Peter,” she seemed to say. „He isn’t hungry for engineers.”
Banga stepped forward onto the warm engine block. She let out a sound that wasn’t a meow, but a ritual chant — a deep, rhythmic resonance. She was negotiating. She offered the Great One the lingering heat of our fuel injectors and the stories of our journey in exchange for a safe passage through the night. The lion bowed its heavy, spectral head, recognizing a fellow hunter. For a moment, the boundary between the living and the mythic dissolved into the desert dust.

Wiatr tutaj nie świszczał; on szeptał w staroperskim dialekcie.
– Mmm… Czujesz to, Agata? – wymamrotał Peter, sprawdzając czujniki na desce rozdzielczej. – Telemetria jest stabilna, ale atmosfera… jest gęsta. Jakbyśmy stali w zatłoczonym pokoju, choć jesteśmy tu sami.
Figa pierwsza to zauważyła.
– Oh! Czy to… duch? Agata, nie ruszaj się!
Banga nawet nie drgnęła. Usiadła na siedzeniu Afriki Twin, wygięła grzbiet i wydała z siebie niskie, wibrujące mruczenie. „Pffft… Wyluzuj, Peter” – zdawała się mówić. „On nie jada inżynierów”.

Did you know? / Ciekawostka
🇬🇧 The Persian Lion (Panthera leo leo): The majestic lion you meet in this episode was once the national symbol of Iran, appearing on the flag for centuries. Sadly, they were declared extinct in the wild in Iran during the mid-20th century. In our story, Banga meets a „spectral” version—perhaps a guardian of the ancient land that the Silver Map has called back to our dimension. 🦁✨
